DNS Removals

Office Move

Pack a house for a move room by room, starting with the spaces you use least, boxing items for their destination room and labelling every carton with its room and contents. Keep a first-night box separate and finish everyday rooms last. DNS Removals can also provide packing and unpacking help, or move items you have already packed.

How to pack a house for a move, week by week

Starting about four weeks before your move gives you time to pack gradually without disrupting the rooms you still use every day.

Begin with spare rooms, storage cupboards, seasonal clothing, books and decorative items. As moving day gets closer, work through living areas and non-essential kitchen items. During the final week, pack most of the kitchen and bedrooms while keeping aside only what you need until moving day.

Being ready before the removalists arrive can also reduce the time spent on the move. If you would rather have help with some or all of the packing, DNS offers a packing and unpacking service.

Packing room by room: the order that saves the most time

Packing by destination room keeps cartons organised and makes loading and unpacking easier.

A practical order is spare rooms and storage areas first, followed by living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms and then the kitchen. Within each room, pack items you rarely use before everyday essentials.

Avoid creating boxes containing unrelated items from several rooms. When each carton belongs in one destination room, removalists can place it in the correct area of the new home without needing to stop and work out where it belongs.

How to label boxes so unpacking is not a second move

Every box should be labelled with its destination room and a short description of what is inside.

Instead of simply writing “Kitchen”, use labels such as “Kitchen: pots and pans” or “Bedroom 2: clothes and linen”. Clearly mark fragile cartons so they can be handled appropriately.

Put the label somewhere that remains visible when boxes are stacked. A simple, consistent system saves you from opening several cartons just to find one item after the move.

The first-night box

A first-night box should contain the essentials you will need before you start unpacking the rest of the house.

Include items such as toiletries, medications, chargers, basic kitchen supplies, a change of clothes, important documents and anything children or pets will need immediately.

Keep this box separate from the main load where practical, particularly if you will arrive at the new property before everything is unpacked.

If there is a settlement gap between properties, DNS can also arrange removalist storage through trusted storage partners.

Fragile items, and what DNS wraps for you

Fragile belongings should be protected individually and packed so they cannot move freely inside the carton.

Use suitable wrapping for glassware, crockery, ornaments and other breakable items, and fill empty spaces in the carton so items do not shift during transport. Do not overload fragile boxes simply to reduce the number of cartons.

If you book packing with DNS Removals, the team can handle the packing and wrapping work as part of the booked service.

Your change-of-address checklist

Changing your address with important organisations early helps prevent missed notices, bills and correspondence after you move.

For a Queensland move, work through these key updates:

  • Driver licence and vehicle details: Queensland licence holders must notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads of an address change within 14 days.
  • Electoral roll: Update your enrolment details with the Australian Electoral Commission once you are eligible to enrol at your new address.
  • Medicare and other linked services: Check and update your details through myGov and the individual services you use.
  • Bank and insurer: Update your residential and postal details directly with each organisation.
  • Superannuation: Check that your fund has your current contact information.
  • Utilities: Arrange electricity, gas, internet and other services for the new property and close or transfer the old accounts as required.
  • Mail: Consider Australia Post mail redirection so eligible mail sent to your previous address can reach you while you update individual organisations.

Do not assume that changing your address with one organisation automatically updates every other service.

As you work through your moving checklist, make sure you know how to choose a removalist in Brisbane, consider using a removalist versus moving yourself, and follow our guide to moving to Brisbane to help prepare for and organise your move.

If your move involves a settlement date, our guide to booking a removalist around a settlement gap can help you plan the timing of your move.

What to declare and what a removalist will not move

Specialty, unusually heavy and owner-prepared items should be discussed with the removalist before moving day.

DNS can move declared items such as upright pianos and pool tables where the applicable heavy-item conditions are met. Grand pianos and pianolas are not included, while items such as saunas, spa units and gym equipment need to be prepared appropriately by the owner before moving.

Tell DNS about specialty items when requesting your moving quote so the team can confirm what preparation or arrangements are required. For the full exclusions and specialty-item conditions, see the Terms and Conditions.

Packing yourself vs booking packing

Packing yourself gives you control over the process, while booking packing can reduce the amount of preparation you need to complete personally.

If you pack yourself, make sure belongings are boxed, protected and ready for collection before the removalists arrive. Preparation matters because DNS works on an honest hourly rate and bills for the time worked rather than by individual item. You can read more about the factors that affect removalist costs in Brisbane.

If you prefer help, DNS can pack before the move and unpack at your destination. You can also review customer experiences with DNS Removals before deciding which level of moving assistance suits you.

These are some of the most common questions people have when preparing and packing for a house move.

Pack your house room by room, beginning with the least-used rooms and packing each box for the room where it will be unpacked. Label cartons with the destination room and contents, wrap fragile items carefully and keep a separate first-night box. Unless packing is booked, belongings should be packed and prepared for the removalists before the move.
Start packing about four weeks before your move, beginning with items and rooms you rarely use and leaving everyday kitchen and bedroom items until the final week. The more prepared the home is when the removalists arrive, the less time is generally required for packing-related delays on moving day.
Update your driver licence and vehicle details, electoral enrolment, Medicare and relevant government services, bank, insurer, superannuation fund, utilities and regular mail. Check each organisation separately because updating one service does not necessarily change your details everywhere else.
Items that are excluded, unusually heavy or require special preparation should not be packed for collection without first discussing them with the removalist. DNS requires specialty items to be declared, and some items are excluded or must be owner-prepared. Check the Terms and Conditions before moving day if you are unsure.
